Nursing is essentially a profession of dedication, love for humanity, faith and courage. To be successful in this profession one should have certain qualities, viz, sound physical health, courage, honesty, emotional maturity and above all compassion to serve. However, these qualities and many more can be developed and nurtured during the training. It depends on the individual to benefit from the opportunities to develop talent, personality and character for becoming an efficient nurse and useful member of the society. The decision to take up nursing as a career should be made by careful and intelligent planning so that candidate shall have personal and professional satisfaction and contribute effectively to the society and the profession.

The Course intends to prepare professional nurses, who are committed to the promotion of health, prevention of illness and care and rehabilitation of the sick. The curriculum provides breadth and depth of knowledge to enable the graduates of the programme to function effectively in varied nursing situations where a nurse may work.

Areas of study include basic sciences - Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Social and Behavioural sciences, Fundamentals of nursing. Beside this Introduction to Nursing Education and Administration, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Statistics and Research are also included.

Information Technology has creeped into almost every sphere of life and nursing is not an exception. The need for computer literacy in nursing was felt and a well-planned computer section with latest computer software has been established in the college. The course is spread out in all four years and is being taught by postgraduates in Computer Science.



Objectives :

  1. Acquire knowledge of theory and principles of Nursing and allied subjects    which are involved in the delivery of comprehensive Nursing Practice.
  2. Apply Scientific principles and knowledge in rendering health services in     the hospital and community.
  3. Assess the client, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care given.
  4. Participate as member of the health team in the Preventive protective,    Curative & rehabilitative health care delivery system of the Society.
  5. Demonstrate initial skills in teaching, management, research,     interpersonal relationship and communications.
  6. Demonstrate leadership qualities and initial skills in problem solving and  decision making at difference levels of work and life.
  7. Recognise the need for continued learning for their personal and      professional development.
  8. Practice ethical values in their personal and professional life.

Admission Requirements :

  1. The minimum age for admission is 17 years.
  2. Should have passed the tow years Pre-University examinations of Karnataka or equilialent examination as recognised by Bangalore University with Science Subject Viz Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  3. Should have obtained atleast 45% of the total marks in Science of the Qualified examination, if belonging to a SC/ST having obtained 40% of the total marks in Science subjects.
  4. The Candidate should be medically fit

Course of Study :

Duration : The Course of study shall extend over a period of four academic years from the date of commencement of his / her study of the subject comprising the nursing curriculam to the date of completion of examinations.

Curriculum : The aim and objective of the curriculam is to Provide educational programme through which the nursing graduates will be prepared to assume responsibility in the primary, Secondary and tertiary care of the people as professional nurses. It is expected that graduates are capables of teaching and supervising appropriate nursing and health care in different settings and Participate in the administration of nursing service and education.

Course of Study : The Course of study comprises of I, II, III and IV year B.Sc., (Nursing) Candidate shall undergo course instruction on the following subjects extending over a period of one / two academic year.

Internal Assessment Marks : Internal assessment for each subject is carried out at prescribed times and the internal assessment carriers 20% weightage of the total University Marks. There will be a minimum of two assignments and three periodical tests in every subject of each year to assess the progress of the candidate.

Examination : Each student must have a certificate of satisfactory attendance, progress and conduct from the principal of the College of Nursing to be eligible for admission to University examination.

A minimum of 80% attendance is required in theory and practicals in each subject. A candidate is promoted to the next higher class if he / she has failed in 2 subjects. The candidate must pass these subjects before the declaration of the result of the subsequent examination.

The students appear for theory and practical examination of the Rajiv Gandhi University at the end of every academic year as prescribed. Examination fee as determined by the University is to be paid by the students.
